Love Those Tiels Aviary is a family oriented aviary. It is run by myself and with the help of my two children, ages 14 and 11. My boys play an active role in helping me keep up with our flock. They are great with socializing our existing birds and the new babies that are born into our household. I'm quite proud of the fact that we share a passion for birds.
My love of parrots began years ago when I was introduced to my first parrot, a Cockatiel named Maestro. An amazing Normal Grey Cockatiel who definitely had a mind of his own. After being dazzled by Maestro's addictive personality, I quickly decided that I wanted to have my own Cockatiel. Not long after meeting Maestro, and doing a lot of research, I purchased my first parrot, a pretty little Lutino Cockatiel hen named Tango.
During the numerous hours of researching parrots, I became intrigued with breeding and the genetics of Cockatiels. The genetics fascinated me and I soaked up as much information as I could. At this point, I wasn't quite ready to take on breeding, but I was very interested in the facts and information behind it.
I joined countless online mailing lists/forums and joined several avian organizations. I purchased some breeding/genetics books and took the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council's (PIJAC) Certified Avian Specialist program, as well as Dr. Susan Friedman's Living and Learning with Parrots...The Fundamental Principles of Behavior (I strongly recommend this course to any one who has a parrot in their life). I also spoke with some well known, long time breeders who very patiently answered all of my questions and passed along their ideas.
I've never had plans of having a large breeding operation, as I want to spend as much time with each chick as I possibly can. At the moment, I am quite content with the 13 parrots I have, 8 of which are breeder birds. Any one who knows me will attest to the fact that I spoil my birds rotten and I love it.
What started out as one Lutino hen has grown to seven Cockatiels, two Lineolated Parakeets, a Quaker Parrot, a Green Cheek Conure, a Maroon Bellied Conure and a Congo African Grey...all thanks to Maestro, a little Cockatiel who stole my heart by serenading a pair of socks.
